Complaints Information for Patients and the Public
The Jamaica Medical Council exists to license doctors and to ensure the proper standards of professional conduct and practice. Our primary aim is to assess whether a doctor’s conduct poses a risk to patients, thus preserving a healthcare environment that prioritizes safety and trust.
Understanding the Complaints Process
Contacting us can be the first step when concerns arise about a doctor’s professional behaviour. For criminal matters like assault, it is also essential to report to the police. The Jamaica Medical Council’s process primarily addresses issues directly affecting the standards of medical practice. It is not designed to settle disputes, which are often best resolved directly with the healthcare provider.
Steps for Addressing Concerns
Direct Communication:
- Start by discussing your concerns with the doctor or healthcare provider involved. This direct communication often resolves issues efficiently.
Local Complaints:
- If unresolved, escalate the concern locally at the hospital or clinic. This approach allows the healthcare provider to swiftly address and possibly rectify the situation.
Formal Complaint to the Jamaica Medical Council:
- If the issue involves professional severe misconduct or impacts the doctor’s fitness to practice, it may warrant a formal complaint to the Jamaica Medical Council.
What We Do With Your Complaint
- Initial Assessment: Every complaint received is assessed to determine if it raises significant concerns about a doctor’s fitness to practice.
- Investigation: Serious complaints undergo a thorough investigation to evaluate potential risks to patient safety.
Examples of Common and Serious Complaints
- Common Issues: Issues like billing disputes or administrative errors typically do not require Council intervention unless they reflect broader professional misconduct.
- Serious Concerns: Serious issues often investigated are as seen in the Medical Act.
Outcomes of the Complaints Process
- No Action: If an investigation shows no significant risk to patient safety, the complaint may be closed without further action.
- Referral or Sanctions: For more serious findings, the complaint could lead to sanctions against the doctor, including restrictions on their practice.
Making a Complaint
- You can submit complaints through our official channels, ensuring you provide all necessary details and documentation to support your case.
