Manage Your Registration

All doctors practicing medicine in Jamaica must be registered with the Jamaica Medical Council and are required to renew their registration annually.

Registration is managed through the Online Doctors Portal. Doctors already registered with the Jamaica Medical Council will automatically have an account and can manage or renew their registration online.

For those registering for the first time, please visit our offices or contact us for more information.

Registration Process

Below is an overview of the Annual Registration process and the steps required to renew your registration. 

 

Annual Practicing Certificate Renewal
  1. Log in to the Online Doctors Portal

    To renew your registration, log in to the Online Doctors Portal.

  2. Submit the Online Application Form and Fees Before February 28th.

    All applications must be submitted before February 28th. You can pay your annual registration fee online using a credit or debit card once you have been cleared to do so and have met all requirements. Reminder notifications will be sent before the deadline, and a notification will also be available in your Online Doctors Portal once registration opens.

 

Full Registration
Full Registration

Medical doctors are required to complete full registration in order to practice medicine in the island on a permanent basis. 

A medical doctor will qualify for full registration if they meet the following criteria:

1. Obtained a medical degree from the University of the West Indies or any recognised medical school listed in the World’s Directory of Medical Schools from the United States, United Kingdom and Canada.

Successful completion of one year of Internship (provisional) with the University Hospital of the West Indies, the Ministry of Health or any other recognized medical facilities located overseas.

2. Obtained a medical degree from a university or medical school outside of the criteria in 1).

Successful completion of one year of Internship (provisional) with the University Hospital of the West Indies, the Ministry of Health or any other recognized medical facilities located overseas completion of any combination of the following:

  1. CAMC parts 1 and 2 
  2. PLAB parts 1 and 2
  3. USMLE parts 1, 2 and 3.

Note: PLAB part1 and USMLE parts 1 and 2 are equivalent to CAMC part 1 and PLAB 2 and USMLE 3 are equivalent to CAMC part 2.

The Full Registration Application Process

Step 1

Applicants are required to contact the council in advance to set an appointment for the registration process.

Step 2

The application process involves an in-person interview. As such, the applicant is required to travel to the Medical Council of Jamaica with the required documents (see below) on the scheduled appointment date. 

Doctors Who Have Completed Internship

  1. Original Degree Certificate
  2. Certified Photostat or certified copies of academic certificates or diplomas
  3. Completed Intern Assessment Forms (with all relevant signatures)
  4. Original and Copies of completed assessment exam (CAMC, PLAB, USMLE) if applicable.
  5. Name and place of work of two (2) medical referees (|consultant grade/senior doctors) to be written on the back of the application form. The address and contact information is a requirement for doctors in private practice or those who practise overseas.  
  6. Copy of Birth Certificate.
  7. Passport size photographs (2) with the name of applicant written on back.

Licensed Doctors (Overseas Applicants)

  1. Original Degree Certificate
  2. Certified Photostat or certified copies of academic certificates or diplomas
  3. Copy of completed assessment exam (CAMC, PLAB, USMLE) if applicable.
  4. Certificate of Registration or Licence from most recent medical regulatory authority 
  5. Certificate of Good Standing from your most recent medical regulatory authority (valid within three (3) months)
  6. Name and place of work of two (2) medical referees (preferably senior doctors) to be written on the back of the application form. The address and contact information is a requirement for doctors in private practice or those who practise overseas.  
  7. Copy of Birth Certificate.
  8. Passport size photographs (2) with the name of applicant written on back.

The licence will not be issued without the interview process.

Step 3

Upon presenting the documents, a registration number is generated and an in-person interview conducted. Once completed, the doctor is required to pay a registration fee to complete the process.

Additional Notes

  • The application process involves an in-person interview. As such, the applicant is required to set an appointment prior to coming in to the Medical Council of Jamaica. The licence will not be issued without the interview process. 
  • The original degree is required. No copies of the original will be accepted on its own.
  • Interns should ensure that all areas of assessment are covered and the relevant signatures attained.
  • The Council may request further information in support of your application. 
Provisional/Locum Registration
The Provisional/Provisional Locum Medical Licence

The Provisional Medical Licence is a limited licence available for medical students who have passed their final MBBS/MD Examination. Having completed their medical degree, they are now required to complete a period of internship at approved local medical institutions before being fully registered as medical doctors.

The provisional license lasts for one (1) year and allows for interns to complete three (3) months in each of the four specialties below:

  • General Surgery
  • General Medicine
  • Obstetrics & Gynaecology
  • Child Health/Paediatrics
The Provisional Licence Application Process
Step 1

Upon notification of an approved post by UHWI or the Ministry of Health, a certificate will be sent to accepted interns via email by the aforementioned institutions.

After which, a period for registration will be made available. It is important that interns apply during the set dates, in order to facilitate the start of your internship. If the applicant is applying outside of the period agreed to, they must contact the Medical Council to set an appointment date.

Step 2

The application process involves an in-person interview. As such, the applicant is required to travel to the Medical Council of Jamaica with the required documents (see below).

Applicants are required to provide: 1.

  1. Confirmation Letter of success in final MBBS/MD Examination or Degree (Applicant’s medical school must be listed in the World’s Directory of Medical Schools).
  2.  Certificate of Selection for Approved Post from UHWI or Ministry of Health.
  3. Copy of Birth Certificate 
  4. Name and place of work of two (2) medical referees (preferably consultant grade) to be written on the back of the application form. The address and contact information is a requirement for doctors in private practice or those who practise overseas. 
  5. Passport size photographs (2) with the name of applicant written on back.

The licence will not be issued without the interview process.

Step 3

Upon presenting the documents, a provisional registration number is generated and an in-person interview conducted. Once complete, the intern is required to pay a registration fee to complete the process. Things to note:

  • Applicants must have an approved post by the UHWI or the Ministry of Health.
  • The provisional license last for a one (1) year period. Only in extenuating circumstances will an extension be granted.
  • Upon completion of internship, applicants can return to the Medical Council to receive Full Registration (if they meet the criteria required).
Special Registration
Special Registration

The Special Medical Licence is a temporary licence available to doctors who are practicing in the island for the following reasons:

  1. Voluntary Service
  2. Residency Training
  3. Research Participation
  4. Emergency Assistance
  5. Specialist Operations

The licence is temporary; as such, it can be valid for one (1) day up to three (3) months (short term) or three months up to a maximum of three (3) years (long term). It is important to note, that application for a special licence must come through a notable organisation and the period for which the licensure will be used must be made clear. 

The Special Licence Application Process

Step 1

The organization employing or affiliating with the doctor must provide a formal letter that includes the following information:

  1. The full name of the doctor.
  2. Details of the doctor’s current practice location and the duration of their practice at that location.
  3. The purpose of the visit and where the doctor will be practising
  4. The duration required for the doctor´s practice.
  5. Confirmation of whether the doctor has previously obtained special registration from the Medical Council.

This letter must be emailed to registrar@medicalcouncilja.com.

Step 2

Upon receipt and acceptance of your request letter, you will be instructed to complete and submit the following documents on behalf of the doctor:

  1. Special Registration Form
  2. Certified Photostat or certified copies of academic certificates or diplomas
  3. Certificate of Registration or Licence for most recent medical regulatory authority 
  4. Certificate of Good Standing from your most recent medical regulatory authority (valid within three (3) months)
  5. Name and place of work of two (2) medical referees (preferably consultant grade) to be written on the back of the application form. The address and contact information is a requirement for doctors in private practice or those who practise overseas.  
  6. Birth Certificate, Passport and any valid form of identification.
  7. Passport size photograph (1) with the name of applicant written on back.

The special license does not require an in-person interview.

Step 3

Upon review, confirmation and approval of the documents, a registration number is generated. Once completed, the organisation is required to pay a registration fee to complete the process.

Additional Notes

  • Individual doctors cannot apply for this licence on their own accord. The letter must be sent through the organization with which they intend to operate through.
  • Upon entering the island, doctors may be required to present their original documents for further validation.
  • A doctor can receive special registration for a maximum of three years, after which they will be required to apply for special registration again. A doctor can receive special registration for up to six (6) years in total. 
  • Acceptance of your application is at the discretion of the Medical Council.

Update Personal/Contact Details
