The Medical Council of Jamaica plays a critical role in the regulation and oversight of medical practitioners within the country.
Membership Composition
Elected Members
eight registered medical practitioners elected in the manner approved by the Minister from time to time for the purpose by the registered medical practitioners resident in Jamaica
Ex-Officio Members
Two (2) members, including the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) or his/her deputy, and the Dean of the Faculty of Medical Sciences.
Ministerial Appointments
Two (2) registered medical practitioners selected by the Minister of Health.
Lay Persons
Three (3) persons, not being registered medical practitioners, chosen from the fields of law, accounting, consumer advocacy or from such` other fields as the Minister may determine,

Key Duties Under the Medical Act of Jamaica
The Council issues practising certificates annually to registered medical practitioners who comply with CME requirements and have paid the appropriate renewal fee.
The Council keeps an updated Medical Register of all licensed medical practitioners in Jamaica. This Register distinguishes qualified practitioners from unqualified ones. Only those on the most recent list of the Register, and in possession of a current practising certificate, are legally qualified to practice medicine in Jamaica.
The Council investigates any alleged cases of professional misconduct. This may involve formal inquiries with associated lawyers and court stenographers for accurate records. Disciplinary action follows if necessary.
The Council is responsible for the registration of medical practitioners, including provisional and locum provisional registrations for newly qualified doctors or those requiring a recognized period before taking the Caribbean Association of Medical Councils examination. Special temporary registrations are also granted for varying periods under supervision.
