What the Medical Council of Jamaica Can Do

The Medical Council of Jamaica (MCJ) is dedicated to safeguarding the public by ensuring high standards of professional conduct, education, training, and competence among doctors. The Council has the authority to investigate complaints about the professional behaviour of individual doctors. Any member of the public, employers, or other healthcare professionals can lodge a complaint against a doctor. The Medical Council may also initiate a complaint against a doctor if necessary. The Preliminary Proceedings Committee of the Council is responsible for reviewing and investigating these complaints.

What the Medical Council of Jamaica Cannot Do

The Medical Council of Jamaica does not have the authority to:

  • Investigate complaints about individuals who are not registered doctors, such as nurses, pharmacists, dentists, opticians, social workers, hospitals, clinics, or other healthcare organizations.
  • Provide compensation or assist in making a claim for compensation.
  • Offer legal or professional advice or representation.
  • Compel a doctor to apologize.
  • Order a doctor to provide specific services, such as giving a particular treatment, issuing a prescription, or granting access to medical records.
  • Provide a detailed explanation of what occurred during a medical interaction. This information must come directly from the doctor or healthcare provider involved.
  • Arrange or provide medical treatment or counselling services for the complainant.
