First Time Registration

Who Can Register?

According to the Medical Act of Jamaica, the following individuals can register with the Jamaica Medical Council:

Qualified Medical Practitioners

Individuals who possess the prescribed qualifications as set out by the Medical Council of Jamaica can apply for registration. These qualifications typically include completing a recognized medical degree and meeting any additional requirements specified by the Council.

Provisional Registration for Newly Qualified Doctors

Newly qualified doctors who have completed their medical degree but require a period of internship can apply for provisional registration. This allows them to work under supervision in a recognized medical facility in Jamaica.

Special Registration

Medical practitioners who may not meet the full requirements for standard registration but belong to specific categories outlined in the Third Schedule of the Act can apply for special registration. These practitioners are typically allowed to practice under certain conditions and for a specified period, often under supervision.

Locum Provisional Registration

Doctors who are required to complete a recognized period before being eligible to take the Caribbean Association of Medical Councils (CAMC) examination can apply for locum provisional registration.

Foreign Practitioners

In certain circumstances, foreign medical practitioners may be eligible for special or temporary registration if they are involved in specific projects or short-term medical missions in Jamaica. The approval of such registration depends on their qualifications and the Council’s evaluation.

Continuing Medical Education (CME) Compliance

The practitioner must comply with ongoing education requirements mandated by the Council for all registration types. Annual practising certificates are issued to those who meet these requirements.

The registration process also includes an assessment of good character, fitness to practice, and paying a prescribed fee. The Medical Council of Jamaica ensures that all applicants meet these standards before granting registration to practice medicine in Jamaica.

You can refer to the official Medical Act of Jamaica for detailed information.
