Negligent doctor slapped with one-year suspension

The Medical Council of Jamaica (MCJ) has imposed a one-year suspension of a medical doctor stationed at the Annotto Bay Hospital in St. Mary.

Dr Mohammed Khan was found guilty of negligence following posthumous complaints from the relatives of one of his patients, who subsequently died after having received medical treatment.

Khan was found guilty of negligence following a series of hearings by a disciplinary panel from the council on February 21 and 28, March 6 and 15 relating to an incident, which involved a patient at his private practice in February 2022.

The patient, who was in Khan’s care, was given local anaesthesia and started having seizure-like movements after an injection was administered. She reportedly died on the way to hospital.

A negligence complaint was made to the council, which decided to have a hearing. The ruling was reportedly communicated to the Northeast Regional Health Authority (NERHA), which decided not to renew his contract when it expired.

The suspension order requires that Khan be supervised by a senior surgeon for six months upon his return to practice, and this senior surgeon will then be asked to confirm his competence.

Additionally, the private facility at which Khan practises should be certified by the Ministry of Health and Wellness before he resumes.
